Joseph A. Schumpeter (1883-1950) was one of the most famous economists of this century with an ambivalent personality. Similar to Goethe's Faust, he had ambitions in academics, politics and business but none of these could really satisfy him. He published his first papers in the age of 22. He was one of the youngest doctor laureates in Austria, the youngest private docent, the youngest professor in Austria etc. However, whereas Faust had a deal with Mephistopheles to explore a situation in which he could be fully satisfied, Schumpeter was rather an unlucky genius without such eternal help. He failed politically as minister of Finance of the Austrian Republic few months after his appointment. He failed as banker and carried over long time high personnel debts. He had a brilliant analytical mind but his skills in mathematics were rather limited. Keynes did "steel him the show" in his second academic life in Harvard and his book "Business Cycles" in two volumes, to which he devoted much efforts was almost unnoticed. Nevertheless Schumpeter influenced this century's economic thought by promoting a strict theoretical approach in economics, a basic discussion of dynamics and statics, an introduction of innovation as source of economic dynamics and others more. |
