has become one of the most sought-after intellectuals in the business world. The setting for his work (and that of his usual collaborator, Christopher Bartlett) is a period of epochal change in business. He has mapped and recorded the death of a variety of corporate truisms—the old corporate structures and the managerial roles and attitudes that went with them. He insists that though the questions have remained the same—what does strategy mean?, how do you motivate people?, etc.—the answers have changed. The answers he provides mainly have to do with freeing organisations from oppressive centralised regimes and no longer aiming for growth through widespread acquisitions, but instead using the inherent potential of organisations, especially the potential of their people wisely and creatively managed, to achieve success. |
